bummer on the runs - paint guys tend to say those runs will buff out but i've never seen them disappear.

this is looking straight as a die dude - without looking at it id say its one of the better panel jobs i've seen - shame they haven't backed that up in the paint (yet)

Cant wait to see your wheels on there and slammed.

you just need some razorblades to carefully razor the runs off and then wet-sand then buff. seen it done before on white paint and couldnt even tell it had a run afterwards

Wrap a piece of masking tape around either end of the razorblade to act as a tiny spacer then move up and down the run slowly planing it off

It was nice and sunny in Masterton today so I rolled the shell into the afternoon sun to give it a proper inspection. It's worse than I thought - there are an awful lot of little pits (particularly in the rear quarters) where it seems that normal bog was used where finishing bog should have been skimmed over them. One of the B pillars has a weird wave in it which isn't hugely noticeable, but it bugs me. Speaking of bugs, I picked up my panels today too. More disappointment.

One door has a big-ass sandfly trapped right smack in the middle of it. Every panel bar the fuel flap, bootlid and one guard has a few spots of sandy stuff trapped in the paint, both rear doors have little runs coming off the door handle indents, one has a chip on the window frame, the scuttle panel paint looks all blobby along the leading edge - actually the metal feels all warpy on the other side of it. Funny, it seemed to be pretty mint before I dropped it off, I'm thinking maybe someone overheated it with a wire wheel or something? One front guard is missing (think I actually left it at the old man's work), the other one, which is the only panel NOT to have something stuck in the paint has a little run on it (but is otherwise so straight you would swear it was a mint steel one). The bonnet has a tiny bump near the front, and a chip on one rear corner where my old man dinged it against the ground (thanks Dad!). The bootlid is all drippy at the rear edge and has a chip in the front corner where I dinged it (can't blame anyone else for that). The roof has a few bits stuck in it, and the inside of the fuel flap is transparent and has NO paint in the inside edge of the metal. (rust anyone?) You can see this and the cracking in the photos I took.

Perhaps worst of all, the rears of both rear wheel arches are just not shaped right.

Of course part of the problem is that the panelbeater is working with something that was originally someone else's work, and it's a bit of a mates rates job, so I will have to bear that in mind, but since it's a significant amount of my money I expect a decent job. Also I'm a bit of a fussy bugger.

Oh well. Hopefully tomorrow the guy will be prepared to re-do things properly without getting upset about it.

In other news, my seal kit (all doors + front and rear windscreens) arrived and they look like quality items. Something to be happy about at least.

I ain't never seen a sandfly buff out and I groomed cars for 4 years, hehe, I won't be falling for that one. Yeah it definitely has moments of brilliance let down by poor execution in other areas. A bit like me really. Wheels? What wheels? I have no idea what you are talking about....

Nah, that's why I'm paying someone else to do it, besides there's still the matter of clearcoat to be brought up tomorrow.... and all the bugs and reactions in the paint
crustywhip wrote:That really sucks. I want to say more but I wont as I dont know who did the paint but runs like that do not go unnoticed.
Looking good tho, serious bone required
It gets a lot lower with the engine and gearbox installed. Will need to talk to the owner of my old car about getting my lowering springs and 910 struts back at some stage.

Well I'm back in Masterton till tuesday, just so that I can take the car back to the panelbeater and show him what needs to be done. They're all good with it, but it's just taken me so long to find hinges. Big ups to Taaki (dirtyold180B) and Adam (torqued) for helping out on that one, and Scott for getting me the bushes in

Dragged the thing out today for a couple of photos. Goes back tomorrow to get the paint issues sorted, panels fitted and the boot badge holes filled (they forgot that too  )

Here's a pic or 3

This thing is so white that looking at it on a sunny day will make you go blind! Also you can just see in the previous pics that I have my door strikers test-fitted, Greg did a superb job plating them and a whole heap of other bits, thanks heaps!

Greg, you must NEVER quit that job!
