Universal alternators

Post by b31x »

Does anyone know of other alternators that would fit an L18? Does a C18 one work, for example?

Does your car have an external or internal regulator? Most of the L series (4 and 6) alternators will fit, but I dont know which year they went from external to internal for the regulators. There is information around on how to "convert" your harness so you can run internal and then you can fit other brands too - some of the usa datsun sites show fitting of big power chevy etc alts.

Rewiring to suit and internal regulator is fairly easy, the hard part is finding an alternator with a v belt rather than a ribbed belt. On my race car I am using a Subaru Justy alternator (small = light) just had to cut down the mount slightly. The early L series alternators used 8 mm bolts later ones use 10 mm. Other markets used local content alternators so there was may different units used. Good luck
