R200 LSD differences

Hey guys

Was pulling a locked R200 out of a mates 260z to fit a newer lsd and found it already had a super tight lsd but it's a type Iv never seen before, anyone know how this type works?
It has the standard clutch plate setup with a fairly thick dished Spring washer on each side of the spider gears which I'm thinking gives you the initial locking torque... But how does the locking torque ramp up as there is differential axle movement/torque. Or is it just a high initial locking torque and when it breaks that limit it allows differential movement?

Hi JMP

I have a C200 Navara beam axle and LSD open on the bench and that looks identical to what im looking at. I have never seen one come out of a IRS diff so i expect its been swapped in at some point.

I haven't had it apart yet but i think its the same as a traditional LSD as the axle input tries to rotate the spider gear it puts pressure on the clutch plate at the other side to transfer load to the spinning wheel.

I have one i need to crank open so i'm very interested as to what you find.

looks like the exact same lsd we pulled out of the s12 full white rsx i was telling you about james. makes me even more convinced that some of these unusual early r200 mechanical lsds were infact factory fitted to some early nissans

we removed the lsd r200 and fitted a lockdiff in its place , currrently hes wiring in a link g4 and installing a td05 and s13 plenum to the ca18det it was factory fitted with. we installed front s13 hubs + arms and a pair of teins. its destined to be used as drift car for fun days when the link is finished being wired and has been tuned.

Cheers for the replies guys

After a bit more research looks like this was indeed a factory nissan unit as it has less clutch plates and a thick spring washer. Aftermarket units like nismo has almost double the clutch plates and the 'spring pressure' is supplied from 4 clutch plates which are dished rather than a thick spring washer.

Unsure if it was originally from an r200 or not but seems to fit fine in the r200 housing

As far as how the old style factory one works i had a play with it again as i was pulling it apart and i think the spider gears are forced against the clutch packs by the design of the gear teeth, as the axles have differential movement the way the teeth are cut forces the spider gears apart and into the clutch packs.

What do you guys reckon, sound plausible, I can't think of any other way for it to work
