B110 - Lowered springs need shortened shocks?

Post by _smp_ »

so, just picked me up some King front springs for my 1200 coupe, 30mm lower than std and some new KYB inserts.
the OG oil ones had, unsurprisingly, given up the ghost after 40 odd years. Strut standard, albeit now with a lick of paint.

just looking to tie everything back in together and realised that with the 30mm lower springs, and the standard insert length, the spring can't be captive....seems like a newbie oversight, but for some reason I thought there would be some leeway with the length/ hat configuration etc.

what's the go...have I missed the finer points of the reassemble, or do I need to get the shocks shortened or look for a set that are >30mm shorter than the 1200 ones (e.g Golf etc)??

cheers for any tips!

when I did mine, I had barts dad machine the threaded portion of the strut insert down and re-thread it, alternatively you could weld tags to the spring seats and bend the tags over the spring to keep it captive to the spring seats, if you get the vw inserts I think you may find they will be too short, and you may need a spacer on top of the insert to keep it captive in the strut tube.

I have king springs in my 1200 ute which I cut a coil off the top to get slamage. I just took my insert out and got an engineering shop to trim 2 inches off the top and rethread in a lathe think it cost me 50 bucks and passes warrants no problems

cheers, yup, thought that I'd need to get them machined.

I'll take them back to Stocks who did a good deal and see what they can do.

I got shorter struts and got body cut down to suit so I still have full suspension travel

busting in on this thread

I'm looking at lowering the front of my b120.

Anyone have some best suggestions for spring and shock combos to get decent slam but still be legally high enough for wofs.
I have no problems doing engineering work., so can shorten shock tops, and have also considered cutting the top of the strut tube down to achieve more travel (yes I am aware of legalities of this so don't bust my balls)

So yeah, would king springs with a coil cut off be a good option?
any suggestions for a shorter shock insert?

Cheers guys, any help would be rad
