A15 Coolant sensor location for megasquirt

Post by jeremiahnz »

Hi guys,

Just working on wiring up my engine for the megasquirt I'll be running, and wanted to see what people had done in the past about the location of the coolant sensor. I want to keep the standard coolant sensor in place for the dash, and have a bosch sensor for the megasquirt as it has known calibration settings. I figure the options are:

1) Install in the upper or lower radiator hose. Upper hose will likely provide an inaccurate reading until the thermostat opens up. The lower hose will show the temp of coolant coming out of the radiator, not the engine - so not ideal
2) Somehow install in the heater inlet hose which comes out the back of the head (I'm not using the heater so could possibly insert the sensor in the hose)
3) Tee off the standard sensor location - not sure how feasible this is.

Keen to see what people have done before on an A series engine.

Thanks

As thingy up ^ There ^ said, Top.
But reason is because of the thermostat.

You'd really want it before the thermostat I think, it might do funny things as it's warming up until the thermostat opens if it's after it.

There's a handy flat on the left side of the head at the front where you can drill and tap for a sensor.

Thanks Bart, would that be the location in this pic where is seems a factory sensor was installed later, or is it on my other left?

If you are not using the heater why not remove the fitting and make an adapter to use that hole. Easy swap if you ever change head.
