Rebuilding/Working an L18

Post by illusive »

Im currently in the process of rebuilding a L18 motor for my 1600 steet car

Im going to be running twin 40mm webers and have head sent to kelford cams for a mild port polish and a full rebuild.
The head i understand is off a 180bsss or there abouts at it has V912 casted on the side can anybody shed some light on this?

The bottom end i want to be fully rebuilt is there anything worth doing performance wise to it? or just do a complete standard
rebuild?

cheers

The V912 is one of the best heads you can have, has the desirable closed chamber design with a lot more meat in the casting for porting. Didn't know they came on 180B SSS's, you are one lucky man!

I thought the V912 was the L20B open chambered head? Like those fitted to 910's?
Biggest of all the inlet ports, and good sized valves. But open chambered?
They don't call me the man with the rubber arm for nothing you know.............

V912 is definitely closed chamber. From the sound of this article, it may actually be a A87 head and a V912 casting at the same time:

Apparently the yanks like to use these on race motors:

Good to see the L series motors finally getting the love they deserve!

Yay another L18 getting dealt too. Im running a V912 head on my race car and mine came off a L18 out of a 720 ute but weather or not it was the original motor im unsure but it is definitely peanut chamber with bigger ports and now even bigger after the die grinder hit it. If you need any parts or info ive just done mine so sing out

Im sure you can't actually pay to much attention to the casting numbers a good rule of thumb yes but there seems to be options on all of them.

Until recently all my research stated that injected cylinder heads where w53 heads, W53 also came in no injected form. I now know for certain 100% positive cos i have one. That they also made an injected A87 head,
And no its not a modified carb head.
