REMOVAL OF TIMING CHAIN COVER ON DATSUN 1200

Could any one tell me if you need to unbolt front of sump bolts to remove front timing chain cover on Datsun 1200 A12 series ?
Checked manual and does not say
Guess if you take front bolts out of sump cover possible leaks may occur if whole sump cover is not removed and new gaskets fitted and sealed?
Trying to avoid removing motor for a small water leak caused by perished front gasket
Appreciate any one comments

From memory I think they are studs on that timing cover. So you may need to remove the whole sump..

They are studs.
What i have done is put two nuts on it and wound the stud out of the thread.
Just return it with some lock tight and you will save yourself hours!

Yeah what Cole said, you can wind the studs out and take the front bolts out of the sump and hopefully get the front off without dropping the sump, cork gaskets aren't the most durable so slipping a razor blade between the front cover and gasket can help. You will probably lose some water into the sump when you split the front cover off also, just something to watch for.
In the past I have been able to loosen all the Sump bolts off just to give a little more flex, they used a little sealer when refitting it.

Finally the job was was completed by my Mechanic today
The Starter Motor and Sway Bar were removed to allow the motor to be raised and the engine mounts undone
The front cover came off ok but to prevent the gaskets rolling back it was easier to remove the sump completely
This means everything is sealed properly and not filled up with sealer as a quick fix
Both cork gaskets were replaced as one split when unbolting sump
The two front studs were were replaced with bolts for easy acsess if needed at a later stage
It was amazing to find the tensioner was barely worn but it was replaced while things were apart
The timing cover gasket was perished thus causing the small water leak but as everything is original you cannt complain
Five hours latter the car was back on the road with fresh Oil / Filter and Antifreeze
